New! How to Prepare for Apple TV 4 Jailbreak! (10.1.1)

Update April 21, 2017 – I had not realized the signing window was already closed. Downgrading is currently impossible and will result in an error. If you are on 10.1.1, just hang tight and block updates!

Update Mar 28, 2017 – tvOS 10.1.1 can be jailbroken after all! There is no ETA at the moment but if you are not currently jailbroken, it would be a good idea to follow the tutorial below to downgrade. If you are already on 10.1.1, just disable automatic updates and be patient. Act fast because downgrading will only work as long as Apple is signing 10.1.1. After the signing window is closed, downgrading will result in an error. Stick around for any future development.

Already jailbroken? – My recommendation is to stay put. There is no reason you should lose your current jailbreak unless you absolutely need the new features from 10.1.1. I myself will opt to lose my jailbreak in order to provide tutorials for everyone. I will keep my fingers crossed hoping for a jailbreak soon.

Things you will need

Let’s start!

  1. After downloading the firmware file, plug your Apple TV into your computer using the USB Type-C cable.
  2. Plug one end of the power cable to the Apple TV, and the other end to a power source.
  3. Open iTunes.
  4. Your Apple TV should show up with an option to Restore.
  5. On Windows, Press and Hold “Shift” then click “Restore.”
    1. Locate the tvOS 10.1.1 firmware and proceed to update/downgrade your Apple TV.
  6. On Mac, Press and Hold “Option” then click “Restore.”
    1. Locate the tvOS 10.1.1 firmware and proceed to update/downgrade your Apple TV.
  7. When finished, disconnect the Apple TV from your computer and connect it to your TV.
  8. Go ahead and set up the Apple TV.
  9. After setting up the Apple TV, make sure you are on tvOS 10.1.1 and remember to TURN OFF Automatic Updates. Watch the video if you don’t know how to do that.
